CHAPTER 4

Travelling the desert at night it has been hours since the travellers saw the oasis.
They’re almost losing hope and thinking of stopping for the remains of the night when suddenly…

Shivu’s horse: Hey! Look up ahead, is that a hell of a mirage or what?
Vincent’s horse: Heck yeah!
Chikuq’s horse: Never seen one like it.

[The three wolves look up. A magnificent tomb embroided with ancient hieroglyphics stands before them, the huge head of a jackal carved above its great doors; the tomb of Pharaoh Anubis.]

Shivu: Hey, wait, a mirage only shows for one person. How are we all seeing it?
Vincent: Because we’re here. Shivu, Chikuq, welcome to Anubis’ Tomb!
Shivu: Brilliant! Let’s run in foolishly without thinking!

[Shivu hops off the horse and makes to take off. Vincent grabs his arm.]

Vincent: Bah-bah-bah! Are you crazy? Do you have a death wish? The curse may be down but don’t think Anubis’ people left it all up to the Stone! There are probably traps all over that thing.

[He gestures to the tomb.]

We’ll leave it until daylight, we need a rest anyway.
Chikuq: Yes, not that I think daylight will make a difference in the ‘temple of darkness’.
Shivu: Tomb.

Chikuq:[sighs] Whatever…

[Chikuq looks around as Vincent removes sleeping bags and tents from the saddle bags and begins setting them up.]

Chikuq: We should post a guard.
Vincent: What on earth for?
Chikuq: I’m sure a tomb will attract more than our attention. And if someone finds us lying here asleep, they’re bound to want to steal some of our stuff.
Shivu: I’m not tired, so I’ll take the first watch!

[Vincent gasps and Chikuq smiles smugly.]

Chikuq: Great idea, Shivu! You’re a light sleeper when you’re sleeping in new places, right? You’d be the best to keep watch.
Shivu: I am, and I will be! I’ll get my sword, just in case!

[Vincent’s mouth drops open and he places a paw on his face in annoyance, then he follows Chikuq over to where he is removing some firewood, that they collected earlier, from a pack and placing it in a pile on the ground.]

Vincent: Chikuq, I really don’t think we need a guard…
Chikuq: Why not?
Vincent: [Yelps slightly in tension] Well, it’s Shivu for a start!
Chikuq: Shivu’s great at keeping watch, you wouldn’t believe how great.

[Chikuq lights the fire and sits back, pleased with his work. He sits down on his bag.]

Now, if you don’t mind I’m going to sleep. Good night!

[Later…
Chikuq lies fast asleep while Shivu is wide-awake keeping watch. He looks off into the distance, his hand placed on his forehead as if creating a cap. He swings around and comes face-to-face with Vincent. Shivu yelps in surprise and crouches down.]

Shivu: Don’t hurt me!
Vincent: It’s only me!
Shivu: Oh? Oh! Hi, Vincent. I was just practicing my trick… Thing… It’s kind of a feinting thing… [He takes a deep breath.] Hi, Vincent.
Vincent: You already said that… Hi.

[Vincent sits down next to Shivu.]

Vincent: So, you’re a light sleeper, huh?
Shivu: Ah-huh. Only in new places, though.
Vincent: Cool, cool. Need some water?

[Vincent hands him a cup.]

Shivu: Huh? Oh, thank you!

[He takes the cup and places it beside himself saving it for later.]

Vincent: Well?
Shivu: “Well” what?
Vincent: Aren’t you going to drink it?
Shivu: Well, I’m not thirsty right now…
Vincent: The heat from the fire will make it warm; you may as well drink it now.
Shivu: Um… Okay…

[He lifts the cup and drinks it.]

Shivu: Tastes a little weird…
Vincent: Well, it has been in the sun all day.

[Shivu lowers his ears and puts his hand to his head. He swallows in a sickly way.]

Vincent: You okay?
Shivu: Um, yeah, I just feel a little funny…
Vincent: Oh, you probably will.
Shivu: Wh… What?
Vincent: Sorry, Shivu. Blame your brother; if he hadn’t have decided to post a guard in the first place… Well, we probably wouldn’t be in this situation.

[Shivu swallows again and lifts his sword. Vincent stands up and raises his hands. Shivu staggers towards Vincent.]

Vincent: Woah, Shivu, watch it…
Shivu: Wh… What did you do?!
Vincent: Keep it down!
Shivu: Did you poison me?
Vincent: No, I wouldn’t do that. Not yet, anyway. It’s just a sedative.
Shivu: Oh… Damn it…

[Shivu’s eyes close and he falls forward into the sand. Vincent grabs his own bag and chuckles evilly then he leaves heading towards the temple.]

[The next morning… Chikuq is still asleep with his arms resting on his knees and his head on his hands.
He falls forward into the smouldering ashes of the fire.]

Chikuq:  Ouch! Ooh, ooh! Hot, hot, hot…

[Shaking his head he looks around. Spinning around, he realises he is alone.]

Chikuq: Vincent? Shivu?

[Chikuq is more concerned about the location of Vincent.]

Chikuq: [Glaring] Vincent! VINCENT!

[He begins to walk forwards.]

Oh, I’m going to kill him! I’ll—Oof!

[He trips over something on the ground. He turns and sees Shivu beneath him, still unconscious.]

Chikuq: Shivu!

[Rushing to his side, he pulls his brother up.]

What’s wrong with you? Shivu!

[Shivu slowly blinks open his eyes.]

Shivu: Oh… My head… Chikuq…?

[He scrambles up.]

Wh… Where’s Vincent? I’m going to…

[Dizzily, he swings his sword.]

…Rip his ears off! I’ll tear his fur out! I’ll… I’ll…
Chikuq: You don’t need to mutilate him! What happened?
Shivu: Damn wolf, you were right, Chikuq! He drugged my drink so he could sneak about- or something…- I don’t know where he went…

[Chikuq looks around.]

Chikuq: He’s taken his bag… And the horses?

[He walks over to where the horses were sleeping. His gaze follows some hoof prints going back the way they came.]

He must have sent them back or something. Here’s his paw prints; looks like he headed towards the temple alone.
Shivu: Chikuq, the Stone! He must be after it!
Chikuq: I know. We’ve got to find him, come on!
Shivu: Wait, wait, how did he even know anything about the Stone?
Chikuq: Grr! Listen, space cadet! Last night I remembered a few things while I was asleep; you know, those kinds of memory dreams.
Vincent didn’t come along for the joy of it, he was in the plane, I remember that now!
He must have listened into our conversation about the hieroglyphics on the aircraft!
He also followed us out after to the hotel and found out where we were staying. Then he comes up with this story about being a trader but wanting to travel, he speaks Egyptian so of course we’d want him to come with us…
Shivu: And now he wants the Honey Stone for himself.
Chikuq: Just like we were supposed to prevent…
Shivu: Well, we have to stop him!

[Shivu leaps up and runs off.]

Chikuq: Hold on…

[Shivu stops and turns. Chikuq lifts his bow and arrows from his back-pack and throws Shivu his sword.]

We’d better bring these. Just in case…

[Shivu glances down at his sword. Slowly he nods.]

Shivu: Okay. But remember, we don’t wound unless we have too.
Chikuq: Says you who was planning to rip his ears off earlier.
Shivu: Yes, well… Whatever…
READ AFTER THE CHAPTER
Poor Shivu :xD: How I would love to think that Shivu's boundless energy would overcome a little sedative but, unfortunally for him and Chikuq, it just don't happen!
By the way, a thought just struck me; if horses wear horse shoes.. METAL horse shoes, then wouldn't the heat of the desert make them pretty dang hot? I mean, I know they're not supposed to be able to feel through their hooves but surely they would feel that?
Well, I suppose they do hammer them on when they're still hot, I think, so...
Ah, a good reason not to bring horses into the desert!

Anyway, yes, suddenly Shivu and Chikuq have weapons! How did they get that past airport security? We'll say they lied and said that the sword was a golf club, and the bow and arrows a toy.

I'm so good at this(!)

Also, when Vincent says "Bah-bah-bah!" there, he's supposed to be making that little noise that people make when you're doing something they don't like but they don't want to yell properly or whatever...
Also, when he whimpers in tension... Best way I could describe that little noise that people make when they kind of raise their shoulders and narrow their eyes. I believe Sully does the same thing in Monster's Inc. when Boo's door disappears and Randall leaves the station. You know, he makes the noise then runs off with the bag.
If you know what it's called or have a better way to describe it, lemme know! I didn't want to say squeak :XD:
